Shivaji Maharaj, also known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhonsale was a well known Hindu worrier & founder of Maratha Empire in Deccan part of India. Chattrapati Shivaji was born on 16th February, 1930 at Shivneri Fort of Ahmednagar Saltanate at the house of Shahaji Bhonsale and Jijabai. His father was at a major position in the army of sultanate of Ahmednagar. Childhood life of Shivaji Bhonsale was influenced by the stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata, so his thoughts were full of Hindutava and religious sentiments. He wants to establish a independent kingdom for Marathi and Hindu people. He was skilled in Guerrilla fight tactics and won many battles against different regional kings and Mughal empire. He was also referred as ‘Chhatrapati’ which means a protector.
He protected his kingdom against many regional attackers also. He seized many other forts and made a powerful army skilled in Guerilla tactics won against Afzal Khan, Siesta Khan etc. He crowned as Chattrapati or King after the death of Sultan of Ahmednagar. He crowned on 06th June, 1674 at Raigarh Fort for the first time and established powerful Maratha Empire. The great worrier Shivaji, was the first or founding emperor of Maratha Empire who got died in 1680 in his fort due to prolonged illness. After his death, Chattrapati Sambhaji became the next emperor of Maratha empire.In his personal life, Shivaji Raje did eight marriages namely Saibai, Soyarabai, Putalabai, Sakvarbai, Gunvantibai, Sagunabai, Laxmibai, Kashibai and blessed with eight children including Sambhaji, Rajaram I. Maratha Empire – Other Important Members of Maratha Empire
In 1680, founder of Maratha Dynasty died because of illness and then his son Sambhaji became the 2nd Chattrapati of Maratha empire in 1680. He was born on 14th May, 1657 from the parents Chhatrapati Shivaji and Saibai. Like his father, he also fought for Maratha empire and battled with mughals and neighbouring states. He was captured and executed by mughals in 1689. He got married with Yesubai and got two children including one son, Shahu I.
After the death of Chattrapati Sambhaji, his brother Rajaram I became the third king of Maratha empire on 11st March, 1689 up to 3rd March, 1700. Like his father and brother, his reign was also full of battles with mughals. He was a child of Shivaji Maharaj and Soyarabai. Chattrapati Rajaram got married with Jankibai, Rajasbai & Tarabai and got his sons Shivaji II & Sambhaji II.
Upon the death of Chattrapati Rajaram II death because of lung deases, his son Shivaji II became the next Chattrapati of the Maratha empire. He was born on 6th June, 1996 and got died on 14th March, 1726. He was the son of Chattrapati Rajaram and Tarabai. He ruled the Maratha empire from 1700 to 1708.
After the death of Chattrapati Shivaji II, Shahu I became the next Chattrapati of Maratha empire and ruled this empire from 1708 to 1748. He was the son of Chattrapati Sambhaji. He was the last established and powerful king of this kingdom.
